Sri Lanka receives German grants to complete hospital initiated by former German Chancellor
Sri Lanka’s Finance Ministry has stated that Germany is giving credit and grants to complete a hospital in Sri Lanka initiated by a gift from former Chancellor Helmut Kohl.
“The construction work of the hospital is nearing completion and it is expected that the hospital could be commissioned in mid-2020,” the Finance Ministry has noted in a statement.
Accordingly, Germany’s KfW fund has given a 28 million Euro credit for the maternity hospital in Mahamodara, Galle, which was begun with a grant from the Helmut Kohl Foundation.
KfW has extended a supplementary credit of 13 million Euro to cover cost escalations.
The Ministry has further stated that the government of Germany has also agreed to give a grant of 2.1 million Euro for technical assistance.
The grant is to be used for a modern Hospital Management Information System (HMIS).
R M P Rathnayake, Director General of Sri Lanka’s Department of External Resources had signed the inter-government agreement and grant agreement on behalf of the government of Sri Lanka.
Jorn Rohde, German Ambassador to Sri Lanka and Andreas Godon, Principal Project Manager the KfW Development Bank had signed for Germany and the lending agency.
