Sri Lanka to prepare strategic plan to promote usage of electric vehicles

The Sri Lankan government is reportedly making arrangements to prepare a strategic plan aimed at promoting the use of electric vehicles in the country with the hope of reducing poisonous emissions in the long term.
A decision to this effect had been taken by Sri Lanka’s Cabinet of Ministers this week following a proposal made by the country’s Environment Minister.
According to Sri Lanka’s Department of Motor Traffic, the number of motor vehicles registered by end-2020 exceeded eight million, local media reports stated.
Local media has reported the government as saying that a considerable portion of those vehicles were older than 10 years and that it was identified that lack of proper maintenance of such old vehicles had led to poisonous gas emissions.
Research carried out by the University of Moratuwa, along with a few other institutions, has confirmed that 60% of the air pollution in Sri Lanka was caused by vehicular emissions, the Daily FT reported.

OSL take:

The government of Sri Lanka has adopted a policy decision to promote a green economy through following sustainable development programme. Sri Lanka is also promoting organic agriculture while also promoting clean energy generation. All this has opened up a whole new business/investment opportunity where prominence os given to sustainable development. This has been given a further boost by Sri Lanka becoming an emerging business destination in the South Asian region given its geographical positioning in the Indian ocean and the many trade agreements as well as trade concessions enjoyed by the country.
