Sri Lanka to buy local eco-friendly fertilisers from 46 bidders for Yala season
Daily FT: Forty-six bidders will be awarded the contract to supply locally produced eco-friendly fertiliser for the 2022 Yala season.
Cabinet gave approval to a proposal by Agriculture Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage to award the contract to the 46 bidders who were selected under the local competitive procurement system.
The Government said 600,000 hectares would be cultivated in the 2022 Yala season and Cabinet approval was given in January to procure locally produced eco-friendly fertilisers for use in this season.
OSL take:
The government of Sri Lanka is focused on promoting organic agriculture in the country. The move has opened a host of new business/investment opportunities in Sri Lanka’s agriculture industry. Apart from the supply of organic fertiliser, there are opportunities in building systems to produce organic fertiliser in the country aa well as securing the required technical expertise. Also, organic agriculture has opened opportunities in seed production as well as other supplementary infrastructure facilities. Given the expanding agriculture industry in Sri Lanka, foreign businesses/investors could therefore explore the growing opportunities in the industry.
