The meeting focused on the importance of adopting a long-term, data-driven approach to destination marketing, underpinned by comprehensive analysis of tourism demand and supply trends, visitor behaviour, destination branding, and international marketing strategies. Discussions also highlighted the need for a transparent procurement process and institutional capacity-building to ensure the successful implementation and sustainability of the campaign.
Participants welcomed the technical expertise and strategic guidance to be provided by MTI Consulting and Skift Inc./JD, whose support will contribute to the development and execution of a globally competitive destination marketing programme.
The campaign is expected to play a vital role in strengthening Sri Lanka’s tourism sector, supporting increased visitor arrivals, generating economic opportunities, and contributing to broader national economic growth.
OSL take:
Sri Lanka’s growing tourism industry is creating new business and investment opportunities for foreign business/investors across hospitality, leisure, transport and tourism-related services, as the country intensifies efforts to strengthen its position as a competitive global destination. The Sri Lankan Government is advancing its Global Destination Marketing and Communication Campaign, supported by the World Bank, to enhance Sri Lanka’s international profile and attract more visitors through a long-term, data-driven marketing strategy. A recent high-level discussion at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism examined tourism demand and supply trends, visitor behaviour, destination branding and international marketing strategies. For foreign businesses, the expanding sector presents potential opportunities in hotel development, boutique accommodation, eco-tourism, wellness retreats, adventure tourism, marine leisure and destination management. Investors can also explore digital travel platforms, tourism technology, transport services and specialised experiences catering to changing international travel preferences. Sri Lanka’s beaches, wildlife, cultural heritage, scenic landscapes and wellness offerings provide a foundation for developing diverse tourism products targeting international markets. More effective destination marketing could help businesses reach new visitor segments, encourage longer stays and increase tourism-related spending. For international investors, opportunities exist to partner with local enterprises, introduce innovative services and develop tourism products aligned with global demand. Potential projects will require careful assessment of market conditions, infrastructure, environmental considerations and regulatory requirements. As Sri Lanka seeks to expand visitor arrivals and maximise tourism earnings, the sector offers foreign businesses/investors opportunities to participate in a developing market while contributing to employment, regional economic activity and export revenue.
