Sri Lanka and Türkiye sign MoU to strengthen agricultural cooperation

Newswire: Sri Lanka and Türkiye have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Agricultural Cooperation, aimed at strengthening bilateral collaboration in agricultural development, modern farming technologies and food security.

The agreement was signed during a bilateral meeting between Sri Lanka’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Employment Arun Hemachandra and Türkiye’s Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Dr. Ahmet Bağcı in Ankara recently.

The discussions focused on several areas of mutual interest, including agricultural development, modern farming technologies, research and innovation, knowledge sharing and capacity building.

Particular attention was given to improving agricultural productivity, supporting farmers, promoting sustainable farming practices and strengthening food security in both countries.

The two sides also explored opportunities to strengthen cooperation between agricultural institutions in Sri Lanka and Türkiye, with an emphasis on implementing practical initiatives that would benefit their respective agricultural sectors.

The newly signed MoU establishes a framework for closer cooperation between the two countries in the agricultural sector.

Deputy Minister Hemachandra expressed appreciation for Türkiye’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation in agriculture.

OSL take:

Sri Lanka’s agriculture industry is creating expanding business and investment opportunities for foreign businesses/investors, as the country seeks to modernise farming, improve productivity, strengthen food security and develop value-added agricultural exports. The recent signing of an MoU on Agricultural Cooperation between Sri Lanka and Türkiye highlights the growing scope for international partnerships in agricultural technology, research, innovation and modern farming practices. Business/investment opportunities extend across several segments, including commercial farming, agricultural mechanisation, irrigation systems, greenhouse cultivation, precision agriculture, biotechnology, fertiliser production and modern food-processing facilities. Foreign businesses/investors could also explore joint ventures with local agricultural businesses to introduce advanced farming technologies, improve supply-chain efficiency and develop export-oriented production. Partnerships in seed development, livestock management, dairy production and aquaculture offer additional opportunities. Agro-processing is another promising area, particularly as Sri Lanka seeks to increase the value of its agricultural exports rather than relying predominantly on raw commodity shipments. Investments in processing, packaging, cold storage, warehousing and logistics could help reduce post-harvest losses while improving the competitiveness of local products in international markets. The country’s established production base in tea, spices, coconut, rubber, fruits and vegetables also provides opportunities for foreign companies interested in sourcing, processing and exporting agricultural products. Meanwhile, growing emphasis on sustainable agriculture and climate-resilient farming is creating demand for water-efficient technologies, renewable-energy-powered agricultural systems and environmentally sustainable production methods. As Sri Lanka seeks to transform its agricultural sector through technology, investment and international cooperation, foreign businesses have opportunities to participate through direct investments, technology transfers and strategic partnerships with local companies.
