SL’s latest submarine cable station inaugurated by President

President Maithripala Sirisena officially inaugurated a landing station that will connect Sri Lanka to the newest submarine cable linking South East Asia, to Europe via the Middle East.
The South East Asia – Middle East – Western Europe 5 (SEA-ME-WE 5) cable lands in Galle in the Southwestern coast of Sri Lanka. ¹
From the very beginning, Sri Lanka has been part of the SEA-ME-WE consortium. The newest cable will link seventeen countries and has the capacity to carry 25 terabitsper second (Tbps).
The inauguration ceremony was also attended by Sri Lanka’s current Minister of Finance, Mangala Samaraweera who was instrumental in revolutionising the country’s telecommunication industry in the early 1990s by liberalising the sector when he was the Telecommunication Minister.

OSL TAKE:

The speed of the submarine cable will in turn speed up Sri Lanka’s telecommunication connectivity which will be another benefit in terms of business infrastructure and will contribute to business efficiency.
Also this will provide an opportunity for new telecommunications operators to enter the market.
