SLIIT launches MSc in Artificial Intelligence to power and address AI talent demands

Ada Derana: In today’s fast-evolving digital world, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as one of the most essential skills of the 21st century, reshaping industries, redefining careers, and offering a distinct advantage to those ready to lead the future. Recognising the growing global demand for AI expertise, SLIIT has taken a bold step forward by launching its postgraduate programme, the Master of Science (MSc) in Artificial Intelligence. Approved by the Ministry of Education, this two-year programme combines theoretical foundations with practical applications.
The curriculum spans a wide range of core and emerging topics, from fundamental AI concepts to advanced areas such as robotics, computer vision, machine learning, deep learning, cloud computing, neuro computing, and responsible AI.
The programme is delivered by an eminent panel of lecturers, including senior SLIIT academics, industry-leading AI professionals, and renowned international professors. With a strong emphasis on research, students engage in hands-on learning and practical projects, culminating in a final-year research project that fosters innovation and applied research.
The official launch of the programme had taken place at the Hilton Colombo Residences recently, marking a major milestone in advancing AI education and innovation in Sri Lanka. Organised by SLIIT’s Faculty of Computing, the event drew an audience of academic professionals, researchers, and industry leaders. The evening featured an expert panel discussion and the symbolic enrolment of the programme’s first student.

OSL take:

Sri Lanka’s growing economy and the expanding economic activities have all resulted in the fast expansion of the country’s ICT and digital infrastructure development sectors. With the country on its path towards becoming a hub in the South Asian region and the authorities focused on transforming the country into an e-economy through an aggressive digitization programme, there’s an expansion in the business/investment opportunities in the ICT and digital infrastructure development sectors. As Sri Lanka becomes an emerging business destination in the region, the need to be on par with the fast-evolving global digital and ICT industries plays a key role. Apart from engaging in digital infrastructure development programmes, the introduction to and education in the latest technologies including AI has become a key requirement in Sri Lanka’s path to becoming a regional hub. The growth and profits of businesses already engaged in these sectors indicate the growing business potential in Sri Lanka’s expanding digital industry. Foreign businesses/investors could therefore explore the growing business/investment opportunities in Sri Lanka’s digital industry and related sectors while also looking at expanding operations through local collaborations.
