Salesforce signals long-term commitment to Sri Lanka’s digital economy push

Daily Mirror: As Sri Lanka navigates a critical phase of economic recovery, both the government and local enterprises are aggressively pursuing a resilient digital economy. Recognising this tipping point, global CRM leader Salesforce, headquartered in San Francisco, hosted its first-ever Innovation Day in Colombo recently, bringing together over 200 business leaders, technology professionals and partners to explore how trusted artificial intelligence (AI), connected data and intelligent automation can redefine business operations. Far from viewing the island as merely an emerging consumer market, Salesforce views Sri Lanka as a hub for digital talent and entrepreneurial ambition. At the heart of that push is Pablo Tachil, Country Sales Head for Sri Lanka at Salesforce — a frequent visitor to the island, drawn partly by its emerging diving scene. Tachil is emphatic that Salesforce isn’t bringing a rigidly boxed solution to the country, but a flexible, modular platform built for the specific needs of Sri Lankan businesses — from AI deployed with strict human-in-the-loop guardrails to support the local start-up ecosystem. “After India, Sri Lanka is where we’re seeing the most entrepreneurs building out a real digital economy. The market is gearing up, and the government is doing a lot to see digital initiatives delivered and scaled. We’re at a stage where the local conglomerates, retailers and manufacturers are doing genuinely innovative things to engage customers and Sri Lanka has always been a customer-centric market. That combination — digital talent and customer-centricity — gives us the edge to step in, which is why we think this is the best time to enter,” Tachil noted.

OSL take:

Sri Lanka’s accelerating digitalisation is creating a growing range of business/investment opportunities for foreign technology companies and investors as businesses, and the Sri Lankan Government move to digitise services, operations and customer engagement across the economy. The expansion is not limited to traditional IT services. Opportunities are emerging in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, cybersecurity, fintech, digital payments, enterprise software, data centres, e-commerce and automation, while the digitisation of government services is creating demand for technology providers and system integrators. Sri Lanka’s relatively strong pool of technology talent also provides an opportunity for international companies to establish software development, technology support, AI and regional delivery centres serving overseas markets. The country’s start-up ecosystem offers another avenue for investment through venture capital, strategic partnerships and technology incubation. The push by large local companies to modernise their operations is further expanding the market for global technology providers, particularly in areas such as customer relationship management, data analytics, supply-chain technology and intelligent automation. For foreign investors, Sri Lanka’s digital opportunity is therefore increasingly about more than selling technology to a domestic market. The combination of digital talent, an expanding technology ecosystem and economy-wide digitisation could allow the country to develop as a regional base for technology services, innovation and digital businesses.
