Marella Discovery, which is the largest super-luxury ship of the Marella fleet, has reportedly called at the Colombo Port in Sri Lanka giving a boost to the country’s tourism industry, local agents Aitken Spence Maritime has stated.
Sri Lanka’s tourism industry, including cruise tourism, fell in 2019 following the Easter Sunday attacks, but confidence in the country is now being rebuilt.
According to reports, Aitken Spence Travels was the shore excursion partner in Sri Lanka for Marella Discovery.
The company has reportedly offered excursions for over 800 passengers from the cruise ship, covering many locations close to Colombo, low grown tea estates, historical sites, Madhu ganga river safaris and tours across the city of Galle.
The excursions are designed to create memories in Sri Lanka through experiences with culture, cuisine, architecture, heritage and way of life.
Marella Discovery is approximately 264 meters in length and 32 meters wide having 902 state rooms with a capacity for up to 2,074 passengers.
Marella Cruises trademarks include a high-end dining scene, a show lounge to rival the West End, contemporary interiors and a range of onboard activities.
Marella Discovery had embarked on its voyage from the Persian Gulf and cruised past Cochin to reach Colombo and was to continue to cruise towards South-East destinations after visiting Sri Lanka.
Marella Cruises, which is the third largest cruise line in the UK with a six-ship fleet, is a division of TUI U.K. and Ireland.

OSL take:

There has been an increase in the number cruise liners calling at Sri Lanka’s Colombo Port. This has resulted in the overall growth in tourist arrivals to the country. Sri Lanka’s tourism industry has shown an impressive return to normalcy following the setback suffered in the Easter Sunday attacks in April. Sri Lanka also continues to be included in lists outlining best destinations for travel this year compiled by world famous travel publications. All this has resulted in the expansion of business/investment opportunities in Sri Lanka’s tourism industry.
