IndiGo resumes key India-Sri Lanka flights
Daily Mirror: India’s leading low-cost carrier IndiGo has resumed daily flights on key routes between India and Sri Lanka, strengthening air connectivity between the two neighbouring countries and supporting tourism, trade and business travel.
The airline resumed services on three important routes from October 1, including New Delhi-Colombo, Bengaluru-Colombo and Tiruchirappalli (Trichy)-Jaffna.
The resumption of daily flights between New Delhi and Colombo, as well as Bengaluru and Colombo, is expected to cater to demand from tourists, business travellers and diplomatic passengers travelling between India and Sri Lanka.
Meanwhile, IndiGo’s direct service between Tiruchirappalli Airport in Tamil Nadu and Jaffna International Airport resumed on October 1 after a three-month suspension.
The Trichy-Jaffna service is scheduled to operate three days a week, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
On these days, the flight will depart Trichy at 1.05 p.m. and arrive at Jaffna at 1.50 p.m. It will leave Jaffna for Trichy at 2.30 p.m.
A total of 88 passengers travelled on the flight when the service resumed yesterday.
The restoration of the direct air link has been welcomed by people in the Northern Province, as it provides a faster and more convenient travel option for those travelling between northern Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu.
The Trichy-Jaffna route is also expected to facilitate long-standing cultural, family and commercial ties between Tamil Nadu and the Northern Province.
The renewed air links between the two countries are expected to contribute to the further development of tourism, trade and economic and social relations between India and Sri Lanka.
OSL take:
The expansion of air connectivity between India and Sri Lanka is expected to further strengthen trade, business and investment ties between the two countries, while creating greater opportunities for Indian companies seeking to expand into the Sri Lankan market. The resumption of daily IndiGo services linking New Delhi and Bengaluru with Colombo, together with the Trichy-Jaffna connection, will make it easier for investors, business executives and entrepreneurs to travel between the two markets. Improved connectivity could support greater business-to-business engagement, investment missions and partnerships across a range of sectors. Sri Lanka’s tourism, logistics, ports, agriculture, food processing, manufacturing, renewable energy, information technology and services sectors offer potential areas for Indian investment and commercial partnerships. The country’s proximity to India and established trade links provide Indian businesses with opportunities to use Sri Lanka as both a market and a regional platform. As connectivity improves, the growing movement of people, goods, capital and business expertise between the two countries could further deepen economic integration and open new avenues for Indian investors and Sri Lankan businesses alike. Businesses/investors from other countries interested in doing business with India could also set up base in Sri Lanka and engage with India using the preferential treatment enjoyed by Sri Lanka in India.
