IndiGo launches direct Delhi-Colombo flights

The Morning: Indian airline IndiGo launched a new direct flight service between Delhi and Colombo on 29 March which operates six times a week using Airbus A320 aircraft, with the intention of strengthening tourism, trade, and business travel.

With this addition, IndiGo now operates more than 55 weekly flights to Colombo from five Indian cities: Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Delhi. The airline also connects Chennai and Tiruchirapalli to Jaffna with 10 weekly flights.

OSL take:

The steady growth in Sri Lanka’s tourism industry and overall economy is evident by the increase in the number of flights being operated to the country by many international airlines. Despite the ongoing conflict in the Middle East that has disrupted flights being operated from the Middle East, there has been an increase in flights being operated within the South and East Asian region. However, the expansion of IndiGo flights to Colombo indicates an increase in tourism, trade and business ties between Sri Lanka and India. While the two countries enjoy an operational free trade agreement (FTA) with preferential treatment being offered to Indian businesses in Sri Lanka and vice versa, Sri Lanka’s expanding business/investment opportunities supported by the close proximity between the two countries have resulted in many Indian businesses successfully expanding operations to Sri Lanka. The growth, profits and expansion recorded by Indian businesses already operating in Sri Lanka and the increasing religious and cultural tourism between Sri Lanka and India have resulted in many business/investment opportunities in Sri Lanka for Indian businesses/investors. Other foreign businesses interested in doing business with India could also look at setting up bases in Sri Lanka to engage with India using the preferential treatment enjoyed by Sri Lankan businesses with India.
