Govt. approves 66 road development projects in North and East
The Sri Lankan government has approved Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s proposal to restore and renovate 66 roads located in the north and east that was ravaged by the country’s civil war.
With the involvement of relevant line-ministries and departments, the Ministry of National Integration and Reconciliation with the participation of the Road Development Authority (RDA) will execute the project.
In order to stimulate private sector investment in these two regions revamping its ravaged infrastructure is imperative. Road conditions in the two regions are deplorable impeding transportation and hindering the ability to promote the regions’ agricultural capacity.
Another objective of the road development project for this region in to fulfil the Ministry of National Integration and Reconciliation’s mandate to encourage peaceful coexistence and unity amongst the regions’ communities by committing to its economic growth and assisting in reducing the regions’ poverty.
The first phase of the project will inject an investment exceeding USD 200 million for the purpose of improving and renovating an estimated 2,500 km of RDA, Road Development Department(RDD) and rural roads.
Under this project, in the Jaffna District roads such as the Valukkaiyaru Punguduththivu-Kurikadduwan Road, Jaffna Manipai-Karainagar Road, Punnalai-Point Pedro Road and Eluthumadduwal-Nagarkovil Road, including many RDA, RDD and rural roads and the Nainathivu and Kurikadduwan jetties are to be renewed.¹
The Murikandi Kanagapuram Paranthan Road in the Kilinochchi District, the bridge across Kokkilai Lagoon, Vadduvaikal Bridge, and Vattapalai Main Road in the Mullaitivu District, Mahilankulam Pallamadhu Road, Peramanalankulam Road, Periyapandivirichan Road and Mullikulam Road in the Mannar District and Kiran Bridge, Santhiveli Thikiliveddai Bridge and Marine Drive Batticaloa-Kalkuda Road in the Batticaloa District will be redeveloped. ²
Also, the Trincomalee and Ampara districts have been included with many rural and RDD roads in northern and eastern districts expected to be covered under this plan.³

Interested parties will be given an opportunity to bid for the projects when they are announced for tender. Developing road networks opens up many opportunities for those involved in the construction field as well as suppliers of products required for road development.
