GoSL to issue GAP certificate to exporters operating in EU market

Export Development Board (EDB) Chairperson, Indira Malwatta says that the EDB had formulated its own Good Agricultural Practices(GAP) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) certification to assist licensed Sri Lankan exporters to easily gain entrance to EU markets.
She said that initially the certification was being trialled with fruit and vegetable exporters, adding that most of these exporters rarely followed internationally set good standards.
“We are doing GAP and GMPto ensure that products are consistently produced, packed and supplied according to quality standards and subject to audits,” she said.
“For the fruit and vegetable sector we introduced local Good Agricultural Practices with European Union aid through the ITC (International Trade Centre). Over 550 farmers now are entitled to use Sri Lankan GAP which will be a natural graduation to getting international certification,” Malwatta said.
“If you are to export processed products to the EU market we have to be able to trace it down to where you got the vegetables. For that you need global GAP certification. In all these cases EDB has money to help companies to do GAP certification in Sri Lanka. The EDB will share the cost with exporters,” she noted.

OSL TAKE:

Certification of produce will better enhance the authenticity and quality of the product. This will in turn increase export volumes. Such an initiative also enables innovations to be introduced to the certification process.
