Fourth-generation fertilizer successfully introduced to paddy cultivation
The Morning: Another successful phase of the national programme to introduce advanced fourth-generation MCI Hybrid Pellet Fertilizer and Biofilm Biofertilizer to paddy cultivation was held at the Wilwatta Farmers’ Association in Mirigama recently. The islandwide initiative is being implemented through a public–private partnership.
The programme aims to introduce farmers to modern agricultural technologies and scientifically proven fertilizer application methods, thereby encouraging more efficient and productive agricultural practices.
An assessment of the paddy harvest from a field belonging to G. R. Leelananda, Chairman of the Wilwatta Farmers’ Association, was also conducted in conjunction with the programme.
A special farmer awareness session was held on the correct and scientific application of MCI Hybrid Pellet Fertilizer and Biofilm Biofertilizer. Farmers were briefed on the recommended application methods and the potential agricultural benefits of these products.
Minister of Science and Technology Chrishantha Abeysena and representatives of the Ministry attended the event. Professor Gamini Seneviratne of the National Institute of Fundamental Studies (NIFS), together with officials of the institute; regional officers of the Ministry of Agriculture; and senior representatives of Lanka Bio Fertilizers (Pvt) Ltd., including Managing Director Samuditha Kumarasinghe, were also present.
By combining the knowledge, technology and resources of the public and private sectors and extending programmes of this nature across the country, the initiative seeks to support Sri Lanka’s transition towards modern agricultural technologies. It also aims to provide farmers with the knowledge and technical assistance required to improve productivity and increase their incomes.

Sri Lanka’s agriculture sector is emerging as an area of growing businesses/investment opportunity for foreign businesses/investors as the country moves towards more productive, technology-driven and sustainable farming. The introduction of advanced hybrid pellet and biofilm biofertilizers through a public-private partnership (PPP) highlights the increasing scope for investment in agricultural technology, modern inputs and research-based farming solutions. Business/investment opportunities extend beyond fertilizers to precision agriculture, irrigation technology, farm mechanisation, crop research, biotechnology, storage, processing and value-added food production. With the Sri Lankan Government seeking to improve agricultural productivity and encourage scientifically based cultivation, foreign businesses/investors could play a greater role by bringing capital, technology and expertise into the sector. The shift towards higher-yielding and more sustainable agriculture also creates potential for export-oriented businesses, positioning Sri Lanka’s agriculture sector as an increasingly attractive destination for long-term investment and technology partnerships.
