CWIT in Colombo achieves major milestone with Phase 1 equipment deliveries completion

Daily FT: Colombo West International Terminal (CWIT) has reached a major milestone in its development journey, with the successful delivery of all equipment required to complete Phase 1. With the latest arrival of 2 automated RMQCs and 3 automated CRMGs, CWIT is in the final stages of Phase 1 completion. The terminal is now equipped with 18 fully automated Cantilever Rail Mounted Gantry Cranes (CRMGs) and 8 automated Rail Mounted Quay Cranes (RMQCs), with more to arrive during Phase 2.
As the terminal prepares for its operational debut in the first quarter of 2025, commissioning, installation, and rigorous testing of the equipment are ongoing. The operations team, which includes a considerable representation of women—a rarity in the industry—is undergoing extensive training to manage these state-of-the-art automated systems.
Once operational, CWIT will enhance the Port of Colombo’s capacity to handle larger vessels and the growing demands of international trade, setting new benchmarks in safety, efficiency and customer centric service. The terminal’s focus on diversity, automation, and sustainability underscores its vision to redefine the region’s maritime industry. CWIT has already received notable attention for this operational model which, combined with robust automation, will further reduce vessel turnaround times and improve productivity.
CWIT’s commitment to sustainability is reflected in its fully electric fleet of cranes and Internal Terminal Vehicles (ITVs), significantly reducing emissions and reinforcing its dedication to environmentally friendly operations. This positions CWIT as a frontrunner in modern, sustainable port operations.
CWIT is a state-of-the-art container terminal, with an unparalleled level of automation in the Port of Colombo, Sri Lanka. The terminal is being developed in phases and will significantly increase the port’s capacity to handle a higher number of mega-vessels and containers. Once fully operational, CWIT will play a vital role in supporting the growing trade and logistics needs of Sri Lanka and the wider region.

OSL take:
Sri Lanka’s geographical positioning in the Indian Ocean in close proximity to the international shipping lines have helped boost the country’s maritime industry. The steady growth witnessed by Sri Lanka’s maritime industry including related sectors like ports, shipping and logistics have posted expansions resulting in an increase in the business/investment opportunities in these sectors. The increasing business potential in the country’s maritime industry has resulted in the Sri Lankan government also identifying the need to further develop and expand operations in the key ports around the island. It is in such a backdrop that the Colombo Port is undergoing several projects aimed at expansion of operations including two container terminals – the East and West container terminals. These expansion projects are also indicative of the overall increase in business/investment opportunities in Sri Lanka’s maritime industry and related sectors. These opportunities range from direct to indirect ones to the development of infrastructure and supplementary infrastructure facilities required to meet the growing demand. Given Sri Lanka’s target of becoming a maritime hub and the increasing business potential in the country’s maritime industry and related sectors, foreign businesses/investors could confidently explore the expanding opportunities in these sectors while also looking at forming local collaborations to further expand operations.
