Canadian government discusses ways to engage in Sri Lankan businesses and new investment opportunities
Canada’s Director General for South Asia at Global Affairs David Hartman along with High Commissioner David McKinnon has reportedly met with Sri Lanka’s Minister of Finance and Media Mangala Samaraweera at the Treasury on Wednesday to discuss deeper participation of the Canadian government as well as Canadian businesses in Sri Lanka’s development, investment and reconciliation processes.
Hartman was accompanied by Political Counsellor Jen Hart, Export Development Canada (EDC) Vice President William Brown, Canadian Commercial Corporation (CCC) Asia Director Yvonne Chin and High Commission of Canada Trade Commissioner Avanti Coonghe.
According to a news report in the local media, Global Affairs Canada manages Canada’s diplomatic and consular relations, promotes the country’s international trade and leads Canada’s international development and humanitarian assistance.
Senior Advisor to the Ministry of Finance and Media, Mano Tittawella and Secretary to the Ministry of Finance and Media, Dr. R. H. S. Samaratunga have also participated in the discussion.

The discussion between the Canadian government officials with Sri Lanka’s Finance Minister on exploring investment avenues as well as deeper cooperation between Canada and Sri Lanka is a positive sign for the business communities of the two countries. The interest shown by Canada in Sri Lanka could be used by local businesses to venture into partnerships with Canadian businesses/investors as well.
