A much anticipated visit to China, the Land of the Red Dragon

The team at Opportunity Sri Lanka visited China in September to explore this colorful and fast-paced destination, explore its possibilities and perhaps stir up an appetite for appealing opportunities available in our island nation. A few of the cities that we will be visiting are Shenzeng, Nanjing, Shanghai and Zhejiang.

Sino-Lanka Relations
Sri Lanka’s relations with China date back several centuries. Records on Han dynasty’s missions which reached several south Asian countries including Sri Lanka mark as the earliest documented evidence on Sino-Sri Lanka relationship. Situated strategically in the middle of the ancient Silk route of the ocean between East and West, Sri Lanka functioned as an entrepot of trade for exchanging commodities. Sri Lanka was one of the first countries to openly support OBOR (One Belt One Road) initiative.

Why China?
The People’s Republic of China has been declared as the world’s second largest economy by nominal GDP second only to the United States of America, even surpassing its fellow tiger economy Japan. China is in a league of its own without question. China has outpaced others in technology, arts and sciences for centuries having intelligently maximized its country potential in terms of high population growth and strong trade ties and now gained excellent momentum in infrastructural and technological advancements as a result of technology sharing via the supply chain. The turning point for the aforementioned catapult of this communist nation came after the Second World War, in 1978, when government leadership changed the focus towards the market-oriented economic system which was largely responsible for the steady growth in domestic investment, cost of living and consumption. It is now an Asian phenomenon all the while supporting its 1.3 billion people and welcoming lucrative business opportunities for other nations looking to reach new frontiers in economic development. As of today, China is the world’s fastest-growing major economy, with an average annual growth rate of 10% for the past 30 years.

President Xi Jin Ping proposed the building of a “smart society” in his report at the 19th Party Congress. The accelerated construction of large cities and urban clusters have played a major role in improving the standard of living of the people and providing more opportunities both for residents and commercial activity around the country. Of China’s many cities, we are paying a visit to its best metropolitan zones such as Shenzeng, Nanjing, Shanghai and Zhejiang to discover its history, beauty and most importantly, its ample business potential.
