20 Sri Lankan firms glitter at Shanghai Jewellery Exhibition

Daily FT: 20 Sri Lankan firms are currently participating at the ‘Shanghai jewelry Exhibition – 2023’ from 22 to 25 June at Shanghai World Expo Exhibition Centre in Shanghai.
Sri Lanka is among many participating countries including Thailand, Korea and Taiwan.
Sri Lanka’s Consul General in Shanghai Anura Fernando participated as the Chief Guest at the inauguration ceremony attended by thousands of gem and jewelry enthusiasts, traders and onlookers around the world.
In his speech, Fernando highlighted the close trade and cultural links between China and Sri Lanka and encouraged strengthening of those bilateral links in the fields of tourism, technologies, gem and jewelry. Fernando also spoke extensively regarding renowned Ceylon sapphires attracting the attention of gem and jewelry traders and enthusiasts from other countries.
Among participating companies from Sri Lanka are Zam Gems, Regal Gems and J jewelries. The exhibition is also being participated by Shanghai Gem and Jade Exchange, Shanghai jewelry Association and Macao Gem & Jade Exchange.

Sri Lanka’s gem and jewelry industry is working towards making gem and jewelry exports one of the country’s leading exports. Local gems, famously known as Gems of Ceylon, have been a historically popular with some stones even adorning crown jewels the world over. Local authorities have taken steps to carry out promotional campaigns in foreign markets as well as participate in key international gem and jewelry exhibitions with the aim of attracting new markets in the international arena. Sri Lanka’s strong trade ties have also helped boost the country’s gem and jewelry industry. There has been a steady growth recorded by the industry since of late and it continues to show growth and business potential. Foreign businesses/investors could therefore explore the expanding opportunities in Sri Lanka’s gem and jewelry industry while also looking at forming partnerships or joint ventures with local businesses engaged in the industry with the aim of further expansion.
