World’s largest hi-tech greenhouse in Japan gets supplies from Sri Lankan company

A Sri Lankan company was recently chosen as the supplier for the world’s largest hi-tech greenhouse that was set up in Japan.
Japan has become the first country in the world to build the most high-tech greenhouse with the installation of the SARA greenhouse in Kasaoka city and it is reportedly the largest single site advance glass greenhouse project with the latest technology available in the world to grow tomatoes, bell peppers and butterhead lettuce.
SARA Inc has reportedly decided to work exclusively with Sri Lankan firm RIOCOCO’s brand coir growing medium.
This project involves operations of advanced greenhouse horticulture and biomass power plant and the cost per acre to build this greenhouse is five times higher than the per acre cost of the normal high-tech greenhouse.
SARA has also developed a new climate control system for semi-closed greenhouse settings.
“Then the next important thing was to select a suitable growing product, which can pair with the climate control system and here RIOCOCO was selected,” the local firm has stated in a media release.
“This is a great and a unique opportunity for RIOCOCO to prove that they are the market leader in coir growing media brands in the world and to win recognition for Sri Lanka as a country to be a part of the Japan’s most high-tech greenhouse operation,” the statement has noted.
The opening ceremony was held in the Kasaoka city greenhouse premises on June 21 where Susantha Shan Halamba, Chairman and CEO of RIOCOCO Lanka (Pvt) Ltd in Sri Lanka and the Ceyhinz Link International, Inc, in Texas, US had presented the Sri Lankan flag to display inside the greenhouse.
This was the first time a “Made in Sri Lanka” coir growing medium product was selected to be used in a most hi-tech greenhouse complex in the world.
According to the company, RIOCOCO coir growing medium products are sold in 52 countries worldwide and it was the only Sri Lankan-based company which has been awarded the world’s most prestigious international business award, Stevie Gold Award in the US.

OSL take:

The choosing of a Sri Lankan company as a supplier by the world’s largest hi-tech greenhouse in Japan is a great feat for Sri Lanka’s manufacturing and exports sectors. It is indicative of the high standards of Sri Lankan products. Foreign businesses could therefore confidently explore opportunities to engage with Sri Lankan businesses. On the other hand, foreign businesses/investors could also explore opportunities to form partnerships with Sri Lankan businesses and engage in the manufacture and exports sectors. Sri Lanka’s geographical positioning in the Indian Ocean and the many trade agreements as well as trade concessions enjoyed by the country makes it the ideal business destination for exporters.
