TikTok launches STEM Feed in Sri Lanka with the support of Sri Lankan government

The Morning: TikTok, with the support of the Government of Sri Lanka, announced the launch of a dedicated STEM Feed in the country, creating a new in-app destination for credible science, technology, engineering and mathematics content, on September 12.

This initiative signals a new era where TikTok, together with the government and its vibrant Sri Lankan community, will come together to reimagine how education can be accessed, shared, and strengthened in a digital-first world.

Graced by the Prime Minister and Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya as chief guest, the launch was marked at an unveiling event in the capital, where TikTok representatives joined senior government officials, education leaders and Sri Lankan creators who are actively contributing to STEM education.

The new STEM feed on TikTok is a dedicated in-app experience where users can explore a curated stream of high-quality content focused on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

It is designed to spark curiosity, promote critical thinking, and expand digital learning opportunities, especially for students, educators, and young professionals across Sri Lanka.

TikTok has also launched a dedicated hashtag ‘#STEMTok’, where it will feature content created by partners, creators and publishers, providing easy access to local language STEM content in the country.

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya said: “When global partners step forward to align with our national priorities, as TikTok has done today, they add momentum, diversity, and reach. When our Task Force engaged TikTok, we asked: Can technology be more than entertainment? Can it inspire learning? Together, we answered yes. Today’s launch is the fruit of that collaboration.”

TikTok South Asia Public Policy and Government Relations Head Ferdous Mottakin said: “The launch of the STEM Feed in Sri Lanka is not only about expanding access to educational content, but also about ensuring that such learning takes place within a safe, transparent, and trusted digital environment. We recognise young people as active stakeholders in shaping the future of education and technology. By working in partnership with parents, educators, and government, we believe Sri Lanka can stand as a regional example of how digital platforms can advance national progress and empower the next generation.”

OSL take:

Sri Lanka’s ongoing digitization drive covering all sectors of the country’s economy aimed at transforming the country into an e-economy has opened a host of business/investment opportunities. The expansion in the country’s digital industry is evident by the ongoing programmes as well as the engagement of Big Tech companies to expand operations in Sri Lanka. With Sri Lanka working towards becoming a hub in the South Asian region, the need to be on par with the fast-evolving global trends in the digital industry have resulted in the emergence of many lucrative business ventures in Sri Lanka in the ICT and digital infrastructure development sectors. The growth, profits and expansion of businesses already engaged in Sri Lanka’s digital industry and related sectors as well as the interest shown by foreign businesses/investors to enter Sri Lanka are clear indications of the increasing business potential in the country’s expanding digital industry. Given all these factors and the continuous developments in Sri Lanka’s digital industry and related sectors, foreign businesses/investors could explore the expanding business/investment opportunities while also looking at expanding operations through local collaborations.
