AUGMENTATION OF KOLONNAWA GRID SUBSTATION FOR THE GRID-SCALE BATTERY ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEM OF 100 MW / 100 M
The Power System Strengthening and Renewable Energy Integration Project (PSSREIP-5A) is a strategically significant undertaking aimed at strengthening Sri Lanka’s national grid and enabling large-scale renewable energy integration. Financed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) under Loan 4548-SRI, this turnkey Design, Supply, and Installation (DSI) contract calls for experienced international contractors to augment the existing Kolonnawa Grid Substation and establish a new 36 kV switchgear station dedicated to a 100 MW / 100 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). The project scope includes the extension of the existing 145 kV Gas-Insulated Switchgear (GIS) with a new transformer bay, installation of a 132/33 kV 120 MVA power transformer and a 33 kV earthing transformer, and comprehensive modernization of protection, control, SCADA/telecommunications, and substation automation systems with industry standard cybersecurity. In parallel, a state-of-the-art 36 kV substation will be constructed, featuring double-busbar SF₆ switchgear, six feeder bays for BESS interconnection (with provision for future expansion), auxiliary services including DC and LVAC systems, rooftop solar, diesel backup generation, advanced energy metering, and security systems. The package also covers all civil, electrical, and mechanical works, as well as testing and commissioning to international standards. With strong institutional support, ADB financial backing, and a transparent international procurement framework, PSSREIP-5A offers a unique opportunity for investors, EPC contractors, and technology partners to participate in a landmark project that underpins Sri Lanka’s clean energy transition.
