Sri Lanka’s tourist arrivals top 1.4 million

The Morning: A total of 1,408,335 tourists have arrived in Sri Lanka so far this year (1 January to 10 August), marking a significant increase compared to the same period in 2024, the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) has said.

According to latest SLTDA figures, the highest number of tourists arrived from India, which totals to 286,085.

Moreover, a total of 135,722 individuals from the UK and 116,257 Russian nationals have also visited the country this year.

Meanwhile, 40,047 foreign nationals visited Sri Lanka during the first five days of August.

According to the SLTDA, a total of 6,963 tourists arrived from India in August which accounts to 17.4%.

Furthermore, 4,345 persons from the UK, 3,090 from China, 3,049 from France and 2,739 Italian nationals have also visited Sri Lanka so far in the month of August.

The steady growth in Sri Lanka’s tourism industry is evident by the increasing number of tourist arrivals to the country. The promotion of many tourism concepts in key tourist source markets and the identification of the country as a must-visit tourist destination have all added to the increasing tourist arrivals in the country. However, the increasing number of tourists to the country has in turn created a host of business/investment opportunities in the country’s tourism industry and related sectors. These opportunities are manifold and range from direct ones to the development infrastructure and supplementary infrastructure facilities required to meet the increasing demand in Sri Lanka’s tourism industry. The increasing business potential in the tourism industry is evident by the interest shown by many international leisure and hospitality brands to explore the opportunities in Sri Lanka’s tourism industry as well as the many expansion programmes undertaken by businesses already operating in the industry as well as related sectors. Given all these developments, foreign businesses/investors could confidently explore the expanding business/investment opportunities in Sri Lanka’s tourism industry and related sectors.
