Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister says tourist arrivals expected to reach 100,000 this month

Prime Minister of Sri Lanka Ranil Wickremesinghe has reportedly said the country is expecting 100,000 tourist arrivals in the month of July.
The latest expected figure comes after arrivals plunged to 37,000 in May in the aftermath of the Easter Sunday bombings.
“Because of the swift action taken by the government, arrivals rose to 63,000 in June,” Wickremesinghe is quoted as saying during a speech in Trincomalee.
“Arrivals will grow to 100,000 by end of July and 125,000 in the following month.”
Sri Lanka’s arrivals were reportedly down 57 percent from a year earlier in June and a total of 100,000 would make it about 50 percent of the volume of arrivals compared to last July when 212,000 visitors came.

OSL take:

Sri Lanka’s tourism sector is on a revival path following the Easter Sunday attacks. In fact the sector has recorded an impressive growth rate following the initial slump recorded by the tourism industry in the aftermath of the Easter Sunday attacks. As stated by the country’s Prime Minister, Sri Lanka expects an increase in tourist arrivals to the country this month given the steady increase recorded since the month of May. The recognition of Sri Lanka as the destination of the year by leading global travel magazines has given a further boost to the country’s tourism industry. Also, the many development programmes that have been launched in the island the supplement the further growth of the tourism sector have expanded business/investment opportunities in Sri Lanka’s tourism sector.
