Sri Lanka’s President notes importance of data reliance post-Ditwah cyclone

The Morning: Cross-agency coordination and data reliance is critical to policy decision-making on agriculture, infrastructure, and healthcare, according to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who addressed a review of the rehabilitation programmes for the flood-affected Matale District.

President Dissanayake stated that the reliance on flawed information has national economic consequences. To stabilise the rural economy and restore food security, he ordered the completion of compensation for damaged agricultural lands before 30 December. He also instructed the officials to meticulously separate and identify correct data to ensure funds reach the “most appropriate recipients”.

The Matale District, a key agricultural and economic region, has seen significant disruption: over 11,800 people were affected, 119 houses were fully destroyed, and 2,618 were partially damaged. The meeting included key figures such as Central Province Governor Professor Sarath Abeykoon, Finance Ministry Secretary Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma, and local Members of Parliament.

OSL take:

While Sri Lanka’s digital industry and related sectors were on a steady growth path with the Sri Lankan government’s commitment to transform the country into a digital economy, there is now a need for further upliftment of the industry given the post-cyclone rebuilding operation. This has resulted in the further expansion of the business/investment opportunities in Sri Lanka’s digital industry and related sectors. Sri Lankan President Dissanayake’s push for more upgraded and developed data systems, especially in disaster preparedness and mitigation work, indicates a further expansion in the business/investment opportunities in the country’s digital industry and related sectors. Given Sri Lanka’s need to be on par with the fast-evolving global digital industry and the ongoing rebuilding efforts following Cyclone Ditwah, the many projects in the country’s digital industry and related sectors present a host of lucrative ventures for foreign businesses/investors. The growth and profits recorded by businesses already engaged in the country’s digital industry and related sectors as well as the interest shown by many foreign businesses/investors to enter the industry indicate the steadily growing business potential in the industry. Foreign businesses/investors could therefore explore the business/investment opportunities as well as look at expanding operations through joint ventures and partnerships with local businesses.
