Sri Lanka’s national tea sale average up in August

Daily FT: The national tea sale average for August 2025 registered Rs. 1,182.27 ($ 3.92) per kilogram, reflecting a month-on-month (MoM) increase of Rs. 54.67 and $ 0.18 compared to July’s average of Rs. 1,127.60 ($ 3.74).

Forbes & Walker Tea Brokers said for the cumulative period from January to August 2025, the national sales average stood at Rs. 1,156.37 ($ 3.87), down Rs. 93.62 and $ 0.22 compared to the same period in 2024, which had recorded Rs. 1,249.99 ($ 4.09).
Elevation-wise performance in August showed mixed results. High Grown teas averaged higher MoM with gains of Rs. 70.83 and $ 0.23, though still down Rs. 36.10 and $ 0.13 YoY. Medium Grown teas improved by Rs. 47.20 and $ 0.15 compared to July 2025 but fell by Rs. 3.28 and $ 0.02 from August last year. Low Grown teas also strengthened MoM with increases of Rs. 44.01 and $ 0.14, yet were down Rs. 5.53 and $ 0.03 YoY.

Sri Lanka’s tea industry is on a growth path with local authorities focused on ensuring Sri Lankan tea regains the top slot once enjoyed by Ceylon Tea in the international market. Tea is also one of Sri Lanka’s key export commodities of the country earning a high revenue for the country. The many trade agreements as well as trade concessions enjoyed by Sri Lanka with many foreign countries have also helped boost the country’s tea exports. Local authorities while promoting the tea plantation industry through incentives and pushing for replanting, while encouraging businesses in the exports sector to add more value and diversify the existing tea and related export product portfolio. Therefore, there are multiple business/investment opportunities in Sri Lanka’s tea plantation industry and related sectors as well as in the tea and tea-based product exports industry. Foreign businesses/investors on the lookout for lucrative ventures could therefore explore the many business/investment opportunities in Sri Lanka’s tea industry and related sectors.
