Sri Lanka’s ICT experts call for change in ICT education curriculum in line with industry demands

Experts in Sri Lanka’s ICT (Information and Communication Technology) sector have reportedly called for a change in the country’s ICT education curriculum in line with the industry demands due to the dynamic nature prevailing in the industry where new trends and advancements of technology should be immediately integrated to the education system.
“Presently this integration is happening very slowly and that’s the reason for creating a big mismatch between the skills demand and supply of the industry,” Chairman, ICT Industry Skill Council (ICTISC), Chinthaka Wijewickrama has told the state owned Daily News Finance.
The report has stated that ICT has become an integral component in all sectors and the global ICT industry and that there are infinite opportunities for Sri Lanka in the global market.
Since it is a dynamic industry that is continuously evolving, the workforce should be up to date with the world trends.
The report has further stated that skills requirements of the industry have two main categories: technical skills and soft skills with the most demanding technical skills are Software Engineering, Programming, Systems Analysis, Business Analysis, Systems designs etc.
According to the report, the new skills requested by the ICT firms besides these technical skills are often qualities of personal nature with factors like attitudes, the world-view, and personal communication skills playing a more important role than before.
Wijewickrama has further noted that the new needs are reflecting not only the changes taking place inside the ICT industry, but also the relationship between the ICT and other sectors.

OSL take:
The government of Sri Lanka pays much attention to the development of ICT and digital infrastructure in the country. Attention is also being paid to develop a skilled workforce in the country that is prepared to face the future challenges. Therefore foreign businesses/investors could explore business/investment opportunities in Sri Lanka’s ICT, especially in the education sector.
