Sri Lanka’s first cable car service opened in Ambuluwawa

The Morning: Amber Adventure Pvt. Ltd., a Sri Lankan-based company, has invested $ 13.25 million for Sri Lanka’s first-ever cable car project in Ambuluwawa, Gampola town, a statement by the company said. 

Accordingly, China National Machinery Industry Corporation (SINOMACH) is named the contractor of the project.

The upcoming cable car initiative will enable a traveller reaching the Gampola Railway station to straight away reach the Ambuluwawa complex. Ambuluwawa Biodiversity Centre or the Ambuluwawa tower, sits atop the mountain Ambuluwawa, rising 3,567 feet above sea level in Gampola, nearly a three-hour drive from Colombo. 

The first phase of the cable car project, being constructed at a cost of Rs. 1.5 billion, targets transporting travellers for 1.8 km, which is slated to be completed by the end of the year. The second phase of the project aims at constructing a travel between the Gampola Railway station and the Ambuluwawa tower at an estimated cost of Rs. 2.6 billion rupees.

The Ambuluwawa Centre, through this development is meant to make Gampola a tourist hotspot. It expects to attract a 10-15% portion of the total foreign visitors arriving to the country.

Gampola is located at a central place en route to the historic city of Kandy and the architectural landmarks – Ambekke Devalaya and the Gadaladeniya temple.

Given all these factors, foreign businesses/investors could confidently explore the expanding business/investment opportunities in Sri Lanka’s tourism industry and related sectors while also looking at expanding operations through local collaborations.
