Sri Lanka’s Board of Investment signs agreement to export Wakame Seaweed

The Board of Investment of Sri Lanka (BOI) has reportedly signed a supplementary agreement with Global Seafoods Pvt Ltd recently to process Wakame Seaweed for export in their existing factory complex.
According to the BOI, the agreement was signed on behalf of the BOI by Mangala Yapa, Chairman of the Board and by Radhika Subasinghe, Director of Global Seafoods and Chandani Weragala had signed on behalf of Nexia Corporate Consultants, secretaries to the company. Group General Manager, Parakrama Weerasinghe was also present at the occasion.
Weerasinghe has said, “Wakame is a seaweed found in the Pacific Ocean which we will be importing from Japan, processing and re-exporting to Japan. It is used for Japanese cuisine, especially soups and some other dishes. It is the first time that this product is processed in Sri Lanka so Global Sea Foods is very proud to be a pioneer in this field.”
He has further been quoted as saying, “Global Seafoods Private Ltd started its operation in 1999 and is engaged in the processing and exporting of frozen and fresh fish globally. Our main markets are Europe and the USA. We also process Sashimi grade Salmon products in Sri Lanka to be exported to Japan. That also is a new product for Sri Lanka export basket which we introduced about two years ago.
“Earlier this particular salmon processing was done in Vietnam, but we were able to persuade our buyers to process it from Sri Lanka.”

OSL take:

The recent sub agreement signed on the exporting of Wakame Seaweed has further expanded the list of Sri Lankan exports to the global market. This is yet another indication of the constantly expanding exports sector of Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka enjoys trade agreements and trade concessions from many overseas nations and this would all result in helping strengthen Sri Lanka’s export sector. Therefore, foreign businesses/investors could explore business/investment opportunities in Sri Lanka’s export sector.
