Sri Lanka’s apparel exports have grown by 5.2% says JAAF

The Morning: Sri Lanka’s apparel exports grew by 5.2% in June compared to the same month last year, with notable gains in the EU (+23.1%) and UK (+20.4%) markets, offsetting declines in the USA (-5.7%) and other regions (-9.3%).

For the first half of 2025 (January-June), cumulative exports rose by 8.95% year-on-year, driven by strong performance in the EU (+16.7%), followed by USA (+4.1%), UK (+6.4%), and other markets (+8.9%).

The JAAF says the figures reflect encouraging momentum in key markets like the EU and UK. The industry continues to navigate global headwinds with resilience, supported by strategic diversification and sustained buyer confidence in Sri Lankan apparel.

OSL take:

Sri Lanka’s apparel sector is one of the key export commodities of the country and generates the highest revenue in the exports industry. The growth in the apparel exports sector is indicative of the increasing business potential in the sector and thereby the expansion of business/investment opportunities. The strong trade ties enjoyed by Sri Lanka with many foreign countries and the competitive 20% trade tariff imposed by the US all indicate the lucrative nature of the business/investment opportunities in Sri Lanka’s apparel sector. The growth, profits and expansion – local as well as overseas – of many businesses already operating in Sri Lanka’s apparel sector further indicate that foreign businesses/investors could confidently explore the business/investment opportunities in the sector. Foreign businesses/investors could also look at further expanding operations in Sri Lanka through joint ventures or partnerships with local businesses.
