Sri Lankan Minister meets Japan External Trade Organization President to boost trade and investments

Sri Lanka’s Minister of Development Strategies and International Trade Malik Samarawickrama has met with Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO) President Yasushi Akahoshi last week and discussed cooperation activities to boost trade and investment between the two countries.
The meeting was held on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting of New Champions, a statement issued by the Ministry has noted.
The Minister has discussed holding an investor forum in Tokyo in partnership with JETRO, as a follow-up to the highly successful event held in March 2018 which generated much Japanese investor interest.
According to reports, last year, the think-tank of JETRO – the Institute for Developing Economies (IDE) co-organised an informative seminar on ‘Global Value Chains and Standards for Trade in Asia’, in partnership with the Ministry.
JETRO is a government-related organisation promoting mutual trade and investment between Japan and the rest of the world and it also helps foreign companies with their entry and expansion activities in Japan.

OSL take:

The meeting between Sri Lanka’s Minister of Development Strategies and International Trade and President of JETRO will undoubtedly boost trade and investments between the two countries. Sri Lanka and Japan have strong bilateral and trade ties spanning many decades and the discussion on holding an investor forum in Tokyo in partnership with JETRO is indicative of the business potential between the two countries. Japan is a key partner in Sri Lanka’s development programme. Therefore, Japanese businesses/investors could explore business/investment opportunities in Sri Lanka or even look at the possibility of forming business partnerships with local companies. Sri Lanka’s geographical positioning in the Indian Ocean and the many trade agreements as well as trade concessions enjoyed by the country makes it an attractive business/investment destination.
