Sri Lankan government launches boat service in commercial capital to reduce traffic congestion

Sri Lanka’s Megapolis and Western Development Ministry has launched a boat service in the country’s commercial capital – Colombo along the Beira Lake from Union Place to Colombo Fort from today (22).
Accordingly, commuters travelling to the heart of Colombo could not take the boat service that is being operated by the Ministry.
The Ministry has stated that passengers can avail themselves of the service free-of-charge for the first month.
Officers from the Sri Lanka Navy are to be deployed to assist in the operation of the boat service, which will have safety measures.
Megapolis and Western Development Ministry in a statement has noted that the service will be managed by the Land Reclamation Authority, and is expected to assist in reducing traffic congestion in Colombo.
The Ministry has further noted that the public can travel from Colombo Fort to Union Place within 10 minutes, instead of spending almost 30 minutes through other means of transport.

OSL take:

The government of Sri Lanka is engaged in an aggressive development programme that covers all parts of the country, which has resulted in a host of business/investment opportunities in the country. The programme has paid special emphasis to the development of transport and connectivity since it has a direct impact on the country’s overall economic growth. The move by the Megapolis and Western Development Ministry to introduce a boat service in the city for commuters to travel hassle free to the heart of the city is aimed at minimizing traffic congestion in the city and increasing productivity. In similar fashion while there are several large scale development programmes, there are also opportunities to engage in supplementary infrastructure development work. Therefore, innovative foreign businesses/investors could explore such business/investment opportunities in Sri Lanka.
