Sri Lankan government to build northern city of Jaffna as a prominent city

Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has reportedly said the Sri Lankan government will work towards making the northern city of Jaffna in to a prominent city and provide solutions to the water issues faced by the country’s Northern Province.
Wickremesingvhe has made this observation at a project evaluation meeting held at the Jaffna Divisional Secretariat at the end of his visit to the Northern Province last week.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister has discussed progress on various steps the Sri Lankan government had taken over the last four and a half years to promote development and reconciliation in the region.
The Prime Minister’s Office has stated that Wickremesinghe had expressed pleasure at the progress of key policies by the government, including releasing land held by the Armed Forces to their original owners.
The Premier has further acknowledged that there were additional measures to be taken and assured that attention would be directed on them.
“We know there is a huge water problem in the northern region, and we have to formulate a proper plan to tackle this issue. This is something that requires the attention of the Government. We have already started taking some steps to provide relief and will introduce new measures in the weeks and months ahead,” the Prime Minister has said.

OSL take:

As stated by Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister, the development of the Northern Province has received much attention and is fast emerging as an area filled with potential business/investment opportunities. The development of the Northern Palaly Airport as a regional airport with direct flight between India and Sri Lanka will further boost tourism, trade, etc in the island’s Northern Province. The close proximity between Jaffna and India will help business/investments in Sri Lanka since the free trade agreement between the two countries could be fully exploited. Foreign businesses/investors looking at doing business with Indian could explore possibilities of setting up base in Sri Lanka, especially in the Northern Province.
