Sri Lankan government approves the construction of 40,000 prefabricated houses for war displaced in North and East
The Cabinet of Minister of Sri Lanka has reportedly approved a proposal to build 40,000 prefabricated houses using concrete panels for war displaced in the North and the East.
The Government Information Department has stated that the houses will be 650 square feet each.
According to reports, the government had earlier proposed to build steel prefabricated houses, which was opposed by civic groups in the area who said such houses were unsuitable for the climate.
Resettlement and Rehabilitation Minister D. M. Swaminathan had instead proposed the building of 40,000 houses under a plan to build 65,000 houses using concrete panels, the local media reports state.
However, the Cabinet of Ministers has been informed that the concrete panel houses had been recommended by the National Building Research Organization (NBRO).
Meanwhile, reports further state that the Cabinet of Ministers had also separately approved a proposal by UN Agencies and non-profit organization to build 25,000 houses for war refugees in the North and the East.
OSL take:
The approval granted by the Sri Lankan government to construct 40,000 prefabricated houses for the war displaced in the North and East provides an opportunity for foreign construction companies to explore for other infrastructure that requires to be built in the North and East areas in order to make representations to the government. Also, the construction work in the North and East provides an opportunity for raw material suppliers to supply the building material required for construction work.
