Sri Lanka Telecom assists in the development of country’s largest Smart City

The Sri Lanka Telecom Group has reportedly increased its contribution towards the national development by expanding its services of developing a Smart City under the ‘Pibidemu Polonnaruwa’ district development project commenced with the patronage of Sri Lanka’s President Maithripala Sirisena.
The local media has reported that several large-scale ICT projects and a large number of other initiatives serving the Polonnaruwa District were vested in the public at an official ceremony held at the Regional Telecom Office and “Chandra Manadapaya” in Polonnaruwa on May 12 with the participation of the President, P.G. Kumarasinghe Sirisena Group Chairman of SLT and other SLT officials including the Chief Executive Officer Kiththi Perera and Chief Operation Officer Priyantha Fernandez.
According to reports, Sri Lanka Telecom and its mobile arm Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel, have allocated Rs. 2,500 million to successfully complete over 14 ICT projects for the benefit of residents in the Polonnaruwa District.
Reports further state that some of the major ICT initiatives the company has implemented under this project include the innovation of the Regional Telecom Office with cutting edge technology, urban and rural communication development project in the district, provision of 5G technology to the ‘Deepa Uyana’ under the Polonnaruwa Smart City project, 4G-850 broadband project, provision of broadband services to over 100 schools under the ‘Smart School’ project, Rural Broadband Project.

The government of Sri Lanka has given priority to developing the country’s ICT sector and building smart cities around the country. The development of Polonnaruwa in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province as a Smart City is Sri Lanka Telecom’s pilot project in its endeavor of assisting the island nation’s ICT development programme. The Sri Lankan government has also offered many incentives for companies engaged in the development of ICT in the country. There are many business/investment opportunities in Sri Lanka’s ICT and digital infrastructure sector.
