The Morning: Sri Lanka has entered into a new partnership with AI Singapore (AISG) to strengthen cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI), following the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on 28 July at the National University of Singapore’s Kent Ridge campus.
The MoU was signed by AI Singapore AI Innovation Director Laurence Liew and Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to Singapore Senarath Dissanayake on behalf of the Ministry of Digital Economy.
The agreement aims to enhance Sri Lanka’s AI capabilities through advisory support, knowledge exchange and capacity building, while aligning with global best practices in AI governance.
The partnership with AI Singapore, a leading national AI programme in the region, comes as Sri Lanka accelerates its digital transformation agenda. The collaboration also coincides with the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Liew said AI Singapore was pleased to share its expertise, adding that the agreement reflects Singapore’s belief in the transformative power of AI and the value of collaborative innovation.
Dissanayake thanked AI Singapore and Singapore’s National Research Foundation for their support, describing the partnership as a timely step in Sri Lanka’s effort to build an inclusive digital economy.
The signing ceremony was attended by AI Singapore Deputy Executive Chairperson Prof. Mohan Kankanhalli, AIAP-X Head James Kok and Minister and High Commission Chancery Head Ahamed Razee, among others.
OSL take:
Sri Lanka’s move to transform the country into an e-economy through an aggressive drive to set up a digital economy has resulted in the opening of many business/investment opportunities in the country’s ICT and digital infrastructure development sectors. These opportunities would witness further growth with Sri Lanka working towards becoming a hub in the South Asian region. Sri Lanka is therefore committed to being on par with the fast-evolving ICT and digital industry to meet the increasing demand of an economy that is on the expansion path. The growth and profits recorded by businesses already engaged in the ICT and digital infrastructure development sectors, the push by local businesses to form collaborations with foreign businesses to expand scope in these sectors as well as the interest shown by foreign businesses/investors in these sectors are all indicative of the growth and business potential in these sectors in Sri Lanka. Foreign businesses/investors could therefore confidently explore the expanding business/investment opportunities in Sri Lanka’s ICT and digital infrastructure development sectors while also looking at further expanding operations through local collaborations.
