Sri Lanka named “Best Island in the World for 2025”

Daily FT: Sri Lanka has topped the 2025 list of “The 50 Best Islands in the World” published by global travel platform Big 7 Travel.

Sri Lanka earned the top spot among this year’s must-visit island destinations, surpassing globally renowned islands like Mo’orea in French Polynesia, the Galápagos Islands in Ecuador and the Seychelles.

“It’s easy to see why Marco Polo called Sri Lanka ‘the finest island of its size in all the world’” the travel site wrote.

Celebrated for its diverse offerings and rich natural beauty, the island nation was praised for its golden beaches, terraced tea plantations, ancient temples, colonial towns, misty highlands, and thriving wildlife. Big 7 Travel particularly highlighted the appeal of exploring Sri Lanka’s 833-mile-long coastline, as well as engaging in wildlife safaris at Yala National Park, home to elephants and leopards.

“This teardrop-shaped island off the southern coast of India has it all,” it added.

The list is based on aggregated scores from previous media results, contributions from the Big 7 Travel editorial team, destination popularity on social media, and destinations capturing travellers’ attention in 2025.

Top 10 rankings include: 1. Sri Lanka; 2. Mo’orea, French Polynesia; 3. Socotra, Yemen; 4. Madeira; 5. The Galápagos, Ecuador; 6. Great Exuma, Bahamas; 7. Seychelles; 8. Achill Island, Ireland; 9. Koh Lipe, Thailand; and 10. Milos, Greece.
