Sri Lanka launches toilet upgrade project in tourist hotspots

EconomyNext: Sri Lanka’s cabinet of ministers has approved a plan for the island nation’s Urban Development Authority to build, or upgrade, 20 toilets at tourist areas such as Nine arch bridge, Ella, Mt Lavinia railway station, and Jaffna Kurikadduwan Jetty complex.
“Due to the lack of sufficient standard sanitary facilities that can be used for public and local and foreign tourists that come in daily to urban areas, the Government has decided to construct sanitary facilities including standard lavatory systems,” minister Nalinda Jayatissa told reporters.
The Urban Development Authority has identified 20 locations around the island according to the urban development plans and the estimated cost is 525.29 million rupees, he said.

The toilets are to be built or upgraded in the following places:

    • Demodara Railway Station
    • Sigiriya Hotel Junction
    • Lake circus of Nuwara / Kandy
    • Gregory Lake, Nuwara Eliya
    • Kinniya Beach, Trincomalee
    • Marble Beach, Trincomalee
    • Nilaweli Coastal Area, Trincomalee
    • Pasikuda, Batticaloa
    • Ruwanweliseya Parking Area
    • Lankapura, Polonnaruwa
    • Jaffna Kurikadduwan Jetty complex
    • Hikkaduwa Coastal Belt
    • Hirikatiya, Dikwella
    • Pareiwella Coastal Park, Tangalle
    • Nine arch bridge, Ella
    • Moragolla Beach, Beruwala
    • Mt. Lavinia railway station
    • Negombo Coastal Park Project, Phase I
    • Battaramulla Junction
    • Badagamuwa forest part, Kurunegala
