Sri Lanka launches spice promotion mission to China

The Morning: Sri Lanka’s spice industry completed its first-ever promotional mission to China dedicated exclusively to Sri Lankan spices.

The initiative was led by the Spices and Allied Products Producers and Traders Association (SAPPTA) and formalised through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Yu Lin Spice Chamber of Commerce in China.

“This programme is a proud first for Sri Lanka, opening a direct gateway to one of the world’s largest consumer markets,” said SAPPTA Chairperson Christopher Fernando. “Our partnership with Yu Lin Spice Chamber creates powerful opportunities for our growers, exporters, and processors to showcase the unmatched quality of Sri Lankan spices.”

The mission highlighted Sri Lanka’s premium range: Ceylon cinnamon, pepper, cloves, nutmeg, and other allied products, while fostering new trade links and global market access.

SAPPTA expressed special appreciation to Yu Lin Spice Chamber of Commerce President Song Jun for his leadership, and to Nalika Kodokara of the Sri Lankan Embassy, whose support proved invaluable in making the event a success.

OSL take:

Sri Lanka’s spice industry is a hidden gem as it is yet to be tapped of its full potential as an export commodity as well as part of the country’s steadily growing tourism industry. The local spice industry produces many spices that are among Sri Lanka’s export product portfolio and enjoys positive returns from the foreign markets. While the many trade agreements and trade concessions enjoyed by the country with many foreign countries have helped expand Sri Lanka’s spice exports, there are still many business/investment opportunities in the local spice industry. Apart from the expansion of spice cultivation, there are also emerging business/investment opportunities in the value addition and diversification of the existing export spice product portfolio. The growth and profits recorded by the businesses already engaged in the industry are indicative of the growing business potential in Sri Lanka’s spice industry and related sectors, especially given the fast-evolving requirements of the global market. Foreign businesses could also look at entering the local spice industry through partnerships or joint ventures with local businesses.
