Daily FT: The Sri Lanka-Greater Mekong Business Council (SLGMBC) of The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce hosted an exclusive Members’ Networking Evening recently at the Port City Sales Gallery, Colombo.
The event served as a vibrant platform for high-level dialogue, relationship-building, and the exchange of industry insights among distinguished professionals and business leaders.
The evening featured a panel discussion featuring Royal Thai Embassy in Colombo Chargé d’Affaires Prangthip Kongridhisuksakorn, Kingdom of Cambodia in Sri Lanka Honorary Consul Ruwan Waidyaratne, and Department of Commerce Acting Director of Commerce Chandima Kiriwandala. Moderated by SLGMBC President Nimal Ratnayake, discussions focused on investment opportunities, export facilitation, and digital transformation, with an emphasis on strengthening business ties between Sri Lanka and the Greater Mekong Region.

Sri Lanka and Thailand enjoy a free trade agreement (FTA) that could assist in the expansion of trade ties between the two countries. With Sri Lanka on an economic growth path with the target of achieving regional hub status, the expanding business/investment opportunities present a host of lucrative opportunities for foreign businesses/investors. These opportunities could be explored by Thai businesses/investors. While Sri Lanka enjoys strong trade ties with many foreign countries, its geographical positioning in the Indian Ocean has placed the country strategically to enable quick access to many foreign markets as well. These factors make Sri Lanka an ideal destination in the region for trade. The many incentive schemes offered by Sri Lankan authorities to foreign businesses/investors also serves to attract foreign businesses/investors to explore opportunities in the country. While Thai businesses/investors could explore the many business/investment opportunities in Sri Lanka given the growth and profits recorded by local businesses engaged in trade indicating the growing business potential, they could also look at expanding operations through collaborations with local businesses. Sri Lankan businesses could also use the trade ties with Thailand to explore business opportunities in Thailand as well.
