Sri Lanka grants contract to supply rail containers to transport solid waste to Chinese company

Sri Lanka’s Government Information Department has reportedly stated that China’s state-owned power plant and railway equipment manufacturer Dongfang Electric International Corporation has been granted a contract to supply rail containers to Sri Lanka to transport solid waste.
The Department has stated that the containers are to carry solid waste by rail from Kelaniya, which is a suburb of country’s commercial capital Colombo to a planned sanitary landfill in the north western city of Aruwakkalu.
The project was launched as a solution to Colombo’s solid waste disposal problem.
The award of the contract for rail containers was approved by Sri Lanka’s Cabinet of Ministers this week.
The proposal was made by Sri Lanka’s Minister of Megapolis and Western Development Patali Champika Ranawaka.
According to reports, Dongfang Electric group also makes sealed garbage container trucks as well as railway engines and passenger coaches and the company had earlier won a contract to supply railway engines for the project.

OSL take:

The granting of a contract to a Chinese company to supply rail containers to transport solid waste is indicative of the many business opportunities in Sri Lanka in line with the country’s development programme. Therefore, foreign businesses/investors could explore business/investment opportunities in Sri Lanka’s development programme.
