Sri Lanka has carved a niche in certain sectors in India says Indian High Commissioner in Colombo

The High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka Taranjit Singh Sandhu has reportedly stated that Sri Lanka has carved itself a niche in certain sectors in India.
The High Commissioner has made this observation recently at the 11th Annual General Meeting of the Indo-Lanka Chamber of Commerce and Industry which was held at Taj Samudra Colombo.
He has noted the fact that SriLankan Airlines is the largest foreign carrier to India, 80% of the Colombo Port’s business coming from India-related transhipment cargo, and India being the largest source market for Sri Lankan tourism as proof of this.
“It is not just because India and Sri Lanka are neighbours. It is because Sri Lanka has carved out a niche for herself in certain sectors,” Sandhu has been quoted as saying at the event.
The High Commissioner has also appreciated the contribution of the Indo-Lanka Chamber towards strengthening India-Sri Lanka bilateral relations.
He has observed that the cornerstone of India’s foreign policy – “sabka saath, sabka vikas aur sabka vishwas” (together with all, for the development all, and with the trust of all) – was not just for India, but India’s approach towards the whole world, which remains most significant in its own neighbourhood.
Meanwhile, Indo- Lanka Chamber President Romesh David in his speech has reportedly referred to the active engagement between the industries of the two countries.

OSL take:

Sri Lanka and India enjoy strong bilateral and trade ties and the historical trade ties have been further strengthened by the free trade agreement between the two countries. There have been many successful joint ventures formed between Sri Lankan and Indian companies. As stated by the Indian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka, while Sri Lanka has carved itself a niche in certain sectors in the Indian market, Sri Lankan businesses enjoy preferential treatment in India. Therefore foreign businesses/investors looking at doing business with India could explore the possibility of setting up base in Sri Lanka to engage with India using the benefits enjoyed by business ventures in Sri Lanka.
