Sri Lanka backs regional solar cooperation at ISA Summit
Daily FT: Sri Lanka has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing regional solar energy collaboration and sustainable energy goals at the seventh meeting of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) Regional Committee for Asia and the Pacific.
Delivering the inaugural speech, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya affirmed Sri Lanka’s commitment to strengthening regional solar cooperation and achieving energy security through sustainable development.
The high-level event, attended by Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha and ISA Director General Ashish Khanna, along with representatives from 124 countries, saw the official signing of the Country Partnership Roadmap between Sri Lanka and the ISA, alongside renewed pledges to expand rooftop solar adoption and achieve 70% renewable energy by 2030.
The meeting, focusing on advancing regional cooperation for a solar-powered future, was held under the theme ‘Advancing Solar Cooperation Across a Region of Diversity and Opportunity,’ with Sri Lanka being the Vice-Chair of the high-level dialogue.
Dr. Amarasuriya emphasised the country’s dedication to strengthening regional solar cooperation and achieving energy security through sustainable development.
Marking the country partnership between Sri Lanka and the ISA Regional Committee, the official framework of the Roadmap was signed and presented to Energy Minister Eng. Kumara Jayakody.
He revealed the initiative of the Government, “Battle for Solar Energy,” to include the expansion of rooftop solar power systems and the Government’s commitment to achieving 70% renewable energy by 2030, laying the groundwork for a greener and more resilient future.
The conference provided a platform for forging new regional partnerships, with the University of Moratuwa identified as a key knowledge and research hub for solar innovation.
Dr. Amarasuriya also participated in the opening of a special solar innovation exhibition, showcasing regional advancements in solar technology and practical solutions for solar adoption across diverse socio-economic contexts.

Sri Lanka’s power industry, especially the renewable energy generation sector, has become a hotspot for business/investment opportunities in the country as it embarks on a path to become a South Asian region. The expanding economy in the country has resulted in an increase in demand for power and Sri Lanka’s commitment to increasing the renewable energy generation component to 70% of the total power mix have all resulted in the expansion of the renewable energy generation sector. The profits and expansion recorded by local businesses in the sector indicate the increasing opportunities and business potential in the renewable energy sector. The business/investment opportunities in Sri Lanka’s renewable energy sector are manifold including direct as well as direct opportunities. All these factors have resulted in many foreign businesses also expressing interest and exploring business opportunities in Sri Lanka’s renewable energy sector. Given all these developments, foreign businesses/investors could explore the many business/investment opportunities in the country’s renewable energy generation sector while also looking at expanding operations through local collaborations.
