Sri Lanka enjoys strong bilateral and trade ties with all countries in the South Asian region and also enjoys free trade agreements with some regional neighbours and preferential trade agreements with several others. Sri Lanka’s geographical positioning in the Indian and the many trade agreements as well as trade concessions enjoyed by the country with many foreign countries have all made Sri Lanka an emerging business destination in the region. Businesses of many countries in the South Asian region have already expanded operations to Sri Lanka to gain access to more foreign markets, especially those where Sri Lanka enjoys beneficial trade concessions. It is in such a backdrop that Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are looking at further enhancing economic cooperation between the two countries. This move has opened a host of new business/investment opportunities for Sri Lankan businesses in Bangladesh and vice versa. With Sri Lanka’s economy on a steady growth path creating many business/investment opportunities, Bangladeshi businesses/investors could confidently explore the expanding opportunities in Sri Lanka. Other foreign businesses/investors interested in doing business with Bangladesh and other countries in the South Asian region could look at setting up bases to engage with these markets using the preferential treatment enjoyed by Sri Lanka with these countries.
