Rehabilitation of Existing Sewers inSouthern Catchment Area ofColombo Municipal Council
The Government of Sri Lanka, with funding support from the European Investment Bank (EIB), is implementing a strategic urban infrastructure project to rehabilitate and modernize the existing sewer network across key locations in Colombo, including Maligawatta, Borella, Colombo Fort, Slave Island, and parts of Colombo South. This high-priority initiative is designed to address the city’s growing wastewater management challenges by upgrading critical pipelines, enhancing pumping station capacity, and improving treatment facilities to meet present and future demands. The project scope covers comprehensive civil works, mechanical and electrical system upgrades, replacement of deteriorated pipelines, and the installation of advanced monitoring and control systems. By targeting densely populated and commercially significant areas, the works will drastically reduce blockages, infiltration, and overflows, while enhancing the network’s resilience against climate impacts such as urban flooding. Through modern engineering solutions and sustainable practices, the rehabilitation programme will significantly improve wastewater collection and treatment efficiency, protect marine and inland water bodies from contamination, and contribute to Colombo’s long-term urban resilience and public health objectives. This EIB-financed initiative presents an opportunity for investors, technology providers, and strategic partners to engage in a donor-backed, large-scale infrastructure modernization programme.
