NCE and FIEO partner to boost Sri Lanka-India trade

The Morning: The National Chamber of Exporters of Sri Lanka (NCE) and the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen bilateral trade and expand export opportunities.

This partnership, facilitated by the High Commission of India in Colombo, aims to enhance cooperation, share knowledge, and improve the competitiveness of exporters in both countries.

India is one of Sri Lanka’s largest trading partners, with trade relations supported by the India–Sri Lanka Free Trade Agreement (ISFTA), signed in 1998.

As a next step, the NCE and FIEO will organize a business delegation to India, including a high-level Business Forum, to help Sri Lankan exporters connect with Indian partners and explore market opportunities.

This initiative is part of NCE’s commitment to help its members expand their global footprint and build sustainable trade partnerships.

OSL take:

Sri Lanka and India enjoy strong bilateral and trade ties that have been further strengthened by an operational free trade agreement (FTA). These ties are expected to witness further growth when the proposed Economic and Technological Cooperation Agreement (ETCA) is finalized between the two countries. While Sri Lanka’s exports industry and related sectors are on a steady growth path, the partnership between NCE and FIEO would result in the further expansion of trade and export ties between Sri Lanka and India. This latest development would further expand the existing business/investment opportunities in Sri Lanka’s export industry and related sectors. While Indian businesses/investors could also explore the expanding business/investment opportunities in Sri Lanka’s exports industry, they could also look at further expanding operations through collaborations with Sri Lankan businesses. On the other hand, other foreign businesses/investors interested in trading with India could set up operations in Sri Lanka to do business with India using the preferential treatment enjoyed by Sri Lanka in India.
