Chinese Minister informs Sri Lanka’s President of growing investor interest on Sri Lanka

Daily FT: China’s Commerce Minister Wang Wentao who recently met with President Anura Kumara Disanayake had expressed growing interest in Sri Lanka by investors considering the current political and economic stability along with the clear policy direction in the country.
He further stated that his visit, undertaken with the participation of over 100 Chinese investors, demonstrates a solid dedication to enhancing economic collaboration between the two nations.
The discussion also focused on the importance of working together to achieve mutually beneficial trade and economic goals during this challenging period. In light of global economic instability, the Chinese Commerce Minister reiterated China’s commitment to providing the necessary support to Sri Lanka.
One of the key objectives of Minister Wang’s visit is to follow up on the agreements reached during President Disanayake’s recent visit to China. The two sides also discussed the timely completion of ongoing development projects in Sri Lanka with Chinese Government support, as well as the prompt implementation of proposed new initiatives.
The Chinese delegation included Chinese Ambassador Qi Zhenhong, Department of Asian Affairs Director General Wang Liping, and Department of Foreign Affairs Director General Shu Jueting.

Sri Lanka and China enjoy strong bilateral and trade ties that could receive a further impetus by the proposed free trade agreement (FTA) between the two countries. China is a key development partner of Sri Lanka and has also placed the country prominently in its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). These factors have contributed to many Chinese businesses/investors engaging in Sri Lanka with some Chinese businesses even setting up bases in Sri Lanka to do business in the region. There are many Chinese businesses operating in all key economic sectors in Sri Lanka with many more businesses showing interest in entering Sri Lanka’s economy. The trade agreements and concessions enjoyed by Sri Lanka with many foreign countries have also helped Chinese businesses in Sri Lanka to gain access to some foreign markets. The growth and profits recorded by Chinese businesses operating in Sri Lanka serves as a confident booster for more Chinese businesses/investors to also explore the growing business/investment opportunities in the country. Chinese businesses/investors could also look at expanding operations through partnerships or joint ventures with local businesses. Also, other foreign businesses/investors interested in doing business with China could look at setting up bases in Sri Lanka to engage with China as well as other countries in the region.
