The Morning: Chinese companies are ready to invest in large-scale dairy farming and export-oriented agricultural production in Sri Lanka, with proposals focusing on the use of underutilised State land, according to officials familiar with the discussions.
The proposals were presented by a delegation from the Chinese Chamber of Commerce at a recent meeting with Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation Minister K.D. Lal Kantha. The discussions took place at the Govijana Mandiraya in Battaramulla.
The proposed investments aim to develop large-scale dairy farms and produce vegetables and fruits for export markets. Attention has been directed at unused lands under the control of the Department of the Land Commissioner General, the Land Reform Commission, and the Mahaweli Authority of Sri Lanka.
The Chinese Chamber of Commerce has formally submitted its proposal to the Minister and to the Presidential Secretariat.
OSL take:
Sri Lanka’s expanding economic activities have opened many business/investment opportunities in all key economic sectors. Among the sectors that have shown fast expansion are livestock and agriculture industries, resulting in an expansion in business/investment opportunities in these industries. These opportunities have witnessed growth in the past few years with the increase in demand locally as well as in international markets. The dairy industry and export agriculture sectors have shown steady growth with the demand for more value added as well as diversified product portfolios in foreign markets. While the strong trade ties enjoyed by Sri Lanka with many foreign countries have given a boost to the local export industry, the expansion in the export product portfolios, especially in the dairy and agriculture sectors have opened many lucrative business opportunities. The expansion and profits recorded by businesses already engaged in the dairy and export agriculture sectors as well as the increasing interest among foreign businesses/investors to explore the expanding business/investment opportunities indicate a growing business potential in these sectors.
