Chinese company wins tender to build hydro power plant in Sri Lanka

The Office of the Cabinet of Ministers in Sri Lanka has reported that the Chinese firm Gezhouba Group Co. Ltd has won a tender to build the main civil works, which includes a dam, of the Moragolla Hydro Power Plant.
The proposal to award the tender to the Beijing-based firm was submitted to the Cabinet of Ministers by Sri Lanka’s Power, Energy and Business Development Minister Ravi Karunanayake.
The Standing Cabinet Appointed Procurement Committee had reportedly selected Gezhouba Group as the winning tender.
Accordingly, the main civil works consists of a 37-metre high concrete dam with five spillway gates, intake, headrace tunnel, surge tank, penstock tunnel and shaft, surface type powerhouse with switch yard, relocation of irrigation facilities and access roads.
The Moragolla Hydro Power Plant is part of the Green Power Development and Energy Efficiency Improvement Investment Programme and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) is to provide US$ 113.86 million in financing for the power plant, while the remaining Rs. 1.93 billion is to be funded by the government of Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka’s Power and Energy Ministry has stated that the power plant will be built on the Mahaweli River and will be located in Ethgala, Kandy.
The total installed capacity of the project is reportedly 30.20 megawatts, with an annual energy generation of 100 gigawatt hours.
The power plant is expected to be commissioned in 2022.
