Chinese to commence construction of Sri Lanka’s first LNG power plant in Hambantota next month

Construction work on Sri Lanka’s first liquid natural gas (LNG) power plant is to be launched by the Chinese in Hambantota next month.
According to the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between Sri Lanka and China the proposed LNG power plant will be a joint venture between the Chinese government and the Sri Lankan state owned Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB).
This LNG power plant is expected to add 300 Megawatts of electricity to the national grid.
Sri Lanka’s Power Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya during an observation tour of the proposed site has reportedly stated that the power plant will have a very low level of environmental pollution.
He has noted that it is a sustainable solution to the country’s electricity needs since it is being implemented as an eco-friendly project.

OSL take:

The government of Sri Lanka has given priority to the setting up of power plants in the country in order to address the looming power crisis in 2020. The setting up of the Chinese funded LNG power plant in Hambantota is one such move. The proposed plant is expected to address the power requirements in the Industrial Zone in the Hambantota Port. The government is also in the process of promoting solar power projects and other sustainable energy generation solutions. Therefore, foreign investors could explore the project pipeline in Sri Lanka’s power sector or even present feasible proposals to the government for implementation.
