A delegation from the chamber led by chairperson Hemlata C Bhoota called on Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to India Austin Fernando, recently, the Sri Lankan High Commission in India has stated in a statement.
“The main objective of the meeting was to discuss opportunities for expanding trade and investment between the State of Gujarat and Sri Lanka,” the statement has said.
Bhoota has reportedly proposed the Sri Lanka High Commission organise a Sri Lanka ‘Business & Investment Forum’ in the State of Gujarat in association with the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce & Industry.
OSL take:
The interest shown by India’s state of Gujarat to further enhance investment/trade ties with Sri Lanka is a further boost to Indo-Lanka ties. Sri Lanka and India already enjoy a free trade agreement as well. All these indicate strong trade ties between the two countries and the priority received by Sri Lanka in trade and investment activities. Therefore foreign businesses/investors interested in doing business with India could explore the possibility of setting up base in Sri Lanka and use the benefits enjoyed by the island for their businesses.
